What is STUMPS?

"STUMPS" is an acronym for Street Tree Urban Movement for Protection and Signage. As the name suggest, the STUMPS initiative involves installing signage as well as tree guards on street trees around NYC. Keep reading to learn more.

Signage

STUMPS Informative Signage aims to imitate exhibition displays you might find in zoos or trails. Meant to be more impactful than ordinary tree guard signs, informative signage cam motivate people to take better care of our street trees.

There are certain rules and regulations associated with the types of signs that are encouraged by the city. Contact us if you want to help design STUMPS signs.

Tree Guards

As a cumulative project for your STUMPS branch, you can create a tree guard. STUMPS Tree Guards are meant to exemplify the work STUMPS has done in a given area.

While tree guard designs are open-ended, STUMPS Tree Guards should generally include STUMPS branding and species names of the trees covered in the signage installation cycle's period.

About Me

My name is Cooper Yang, the founder of the NYC STUMPS program. I am a high school student and a proud member of NYC District 3. I’m deeply interested in how the city works: how work in the foreground as well as work behind the scenes can have lasting effects on the city. Through interning for the City Council District 3 office, I oversee and facilitate a number of initiatives to improve tree cover and health in my district, including tree pit surveys and requests. I have also been working with NYC Parks through their advanced stewardship program, and have assisted with various group efforts to reforest parts of Manhattan. My goal with the STUMPS program is to improve the appearance of our trees, in turn promoting the health of our city.
